What Do Short Quotations and Famous Sayings Mean?
They usually have a much larger meaning than the short phrase itself.
Idioms are really what sayings are. Let me give you a few examples:
Example Famous Mottos and Sayings Interpretation
- “There is no free lunch”
This phrase does not mean that you will never find a free lunch but rather “watch out” or “buyer beware” when an offer appears too sweet - “Let the Cat Out of the Bag”
It doesn’t mean that you should keep your cat in a bag for a long period of time. When this phrase is recited it means someone has broken a promise of secrecy. - “You Cannot Judge a Book by Its Cover”
This does not refer to books at all. It means that you cannot form an opinion of a person by they way look.
These proverbs or idioms are a product of a culturally-formed thought process summary. They express more than just attitudes or common beliefs of people. In fact, they can’t influence future events when interpreted as the author intended.
