Design a 4 x 6″ Postcard in 5 Minutes by using a Background Phantom Screen

02/08/2007

Postcard Design From the Ground up

One of the most interesting steps of creating your postcard is choosing the right background image. Once you find that image with the prefect look and feel what to do so it is printable and easily read? I am going to share a secret that I have been using for years to quickly make any high resolution photograph ready to get professionally printed in 5 minutes from start to finish.

For demonstration purposes I we’ll use one of our most valuable products that is included free in our printing, Aqueous coating. The idea is, we want to let our clients and prospects know that every printing order is covered with a protective coating that is 100% environmentally friendly.

In three easy steps here we go…

Select your image- Go to any of your image of clip art collection that allow for you to print in their license agreement. Clear your mind of any graphic effects that are going to be applied and make your image selection based on what is most suitable. This is my image of choice.

Prepare your layout to print- There are 2 basic elements that matter to me now, the background and the graphic element such as text, logos or any other graphic objects used to deliver my message. This is going to be used for the backside of my postcard and I want to my artwork on it tastefully. Here is my layout for the back side of my postcard.

Unite The graphics to the Photograph- Now I am going to simply lay the graphic elements over the background of choice with absolutely no modifications.

As you can see the effect is not a desired one

Adjust the background transparency- In Adobe Illustrator change the background transparency to suit.

The result

In 4 easy steps we have completed a professionally postcard design that will be easily understood. Use cmyk and the Pantone Matching System when extra colors are required. For example if you want to print a postcard with the 4 process colors plus a special color all you need to do is set up an additional spot color in your software program. To do this you must use publishing programs that allow you to properly execute it. Some of the more popular programs includeAdobe Illustrator, Quark Express, In Design and PhotoShop. Simply set your file up in CMYK mode and use it to get your own digital file professionally printed. Employ it colors, do not use Pantone colours unless we are printing a special colour. Employ it files when printing. Use cmyk to print colors like warm skin tones. Employ it for going to a commercial printing press.

What Else I Like to Use Adobe Illustrator For

We like above illustrator due to its easy in making print ready sheets. In our business, the faster and more accurately we can put it together the happier our clients are. We strive to actually deliver your product early, to do this we need to count on our people and software we use. Illustrator has many Customizable templates for brochures, newsletters and stationery that help you get off on the right foot and allows you to adapt you them quickly and accurately, day in and day out. You can use Photoshop when I you an optimized web version or just export a vector file right from Illustrator.

We use this program for a composition made of many non-objective shapes. Many of our projects are 2 fold, for the web and print. By using the web export filter as shown above you can also make flash files (swf) by choosing the option and your files are flawlessly output in flash format. To optimize the result make sure your file is 100% vector based as flash is also vector based and will understand this language completely. You can use Illustrator when you want to deal with color for your designs properly for your website and print media. Don’t be afraid to use this great program for working with other programs such as Corel Draw together by using the various export filters.

What are Process Colors

Four color process is a common method used today in many print shops . But you can take it a step further by using Six-color process printing> it is often used by artists when printing numbered prints of their works. By adding the extra colors they are main used as primary an secondary tint plates that further highlight and enhance the printed image. This process is usually carried on acid free paper to avoid “yellowing” over time. CMYK is also referred to as four-color process printing by many printers, but it is important to clarify if it’s digital or litho CMYK. The printed result is much different between the 2. Four-colour print is a cost efficient, high quality print and litho method that can turn your boring single color leaflet into an elegant eye-grabbing, memorable printed piece. When you make your own files for print, color quality and color resolution are everything. You are the author of your own destiny, so make sure you get it right!

Top it up with Aqueous Coating

This is a covering that is 100% environmentally friendly since it is cured with light and not heat and no solvents enter the atmosphere. This protective print coating is a low-pollution coating made under environmental-protective standards. AQ seems to be an attractive option to any other coating because of its low cost, quick drying times and environmental friendliness. It is a coating that is much more effective than varnish and can tolerate books shifting around or water damage without scuffing. The coating makes it possible for printers to produce finish jobs faster, which generally results in your order being produced much quicker with ANY sacrifice in quality.

What type of paper is available to print my postcard on?

01/26/2007

In the world of postcard marketing there are many options available when it comes time to choose the type of paper you want to print on. As a standard most printing companies print on a semi gloss paper known as Cornwall Cover. It is probably the most commonly used brand of semi gloss coated covers used by printing companies in Canada. Here is some information on the characteristics of this grade of paper:Color: Superior white shade
Finish: Gloss (65) and seven embossed finishes
Weight: 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 14 pt.
Size: Available in most popular formats, along with three
Job-oriented sizes for digital
Brightness: 92 GE
Archival: Elemental chlorine-free and acid-free (alkaline)
Recycled: 10% post-consumer fiber
FSC HP Indigo-certified

This is also the type of material that we use when asked to produce a standard postcard for our clients. We purchase multiple tons of this at one time so we can pass along a huge savings to the client on paper costs alone. When you take that into account, coupled with our ability to combine and manage many clients on 1 press sheet our end product is a supreme value for the dollar. For those of you that are not familiar with combination printing (AKA gang printing) it is when a printing company compiles multiple clients on one sheet of paper that all have the same printing specifications. Here is an example of one of our typical press sheets that we produce.

With the proper pre-press equipment, presses and staff we can do this with out sacrificing the quality of any project included on this press run. Once the press runs each order, the big sheet you see above is gillotine cutt down to finished size, packaged indivually and shiped to each customer’s doorstep. We can produce full colour postcards for as little as $135/ 500 4 X 6 postcards.

What Other Finishes are available?

There are thousands of other choices that are available to consumers that are looking for a different feel to their postcard. For example some folks like to create a vintage or antique look to their postcard. The option available for this includes materials that have a parchment finish. Here is an example of the material we use for this type of postcard application.

For softer coloured papers the CMYK printing process will be just fine. However, if a choice of paper that has a darker tone is made one must be aware of the possible influence that this may have on the CMYK printing Process. CMYK printing utilizes four primary colours of Inks Cyan, Magenta and Black.

When these colours are printed on paper the truest-to-life reproduction will always be on white paper. The reason for this is white (color of the paper) serves as a color. When the CMYK inks are printed they are printed in many different tones and screen values that overlay each other and the paper to create the illusion of the original photograph. If you decide to change the background color by selecting a paper choice other than white expect it to impact the finished look. Many graphic designers are familiar with this and apply some very interesting graphic effects, taking into account the background colour of paper to be used. Here I am going to show you the same project printed on white a madium coloured background and a dark background paper choice.

Image as accurate as possible in digital format

As you can see the backgrounds used play a role in determining the overall hue of colour printed. In these cases the exact same printing plates and settings were used. In the example marked “White Background” the image appears in its original state. In the second example marked “Medium Coloured Background” the background has influenced the image in a positive way. You will notice that the skin tones of staff members have actually improved. In the example marked “Dark Coloured Background” the effect is negative in terms of readability. In this case the effect is not a desired one. However, if you are a graphic designer and are familiar with the influence paper has on printing you can create very unique concepts by employing this graphic design technique. Often, when we use a really dark background paper for book cover or special effect printing technique we combine lithography with embossing and/or foil stamping.

If you are trying to reproduce original images via lithography and want to maintain the integrity of each image, printing on white paper is your best bet. If you look at Digital photo printing it is the process of developing digital photos into prints and is always printed on white. To create interesting appearances printing digital photos offers choices such as matte, glossy, linen or textured photo prints, but always in white.

When you are seeking the advice and professionalism of designers in the graphic design industry it is a smart plan to make sure that they will be able to meet your needs in both worlds, digital and print. There are many variables in both design fields that play a part in the finished concept and its possible applications for you. Good graphic designers will always take the steps of thinking, conceptualizing, designing and providing a real prototype of the polished look. In order to do this the designer must, first, contain the knowledge.

Postcards are Your Silent Partner in Marketing

Making Your Postcard Live Forever

Most of the marketing material you send out goes straight Post Card Style: Abstract Wheels Chaininto the trashcan. Few marketing mailers stand up to the gatekeeper’s test. It is a proven fact that postcards with a catchy design make it past the gatekeeper more times than not. So you need to ask your self one important question… Why are you not doing postcard mailings?

The inside secret is to set up the card to market properly for you and your company. Make sure the front of your postcard is colorful and well layed out so it speaks without having to read text. Maybe you want to try a catchy tagline with your website address printed on a beautiful color image of your choice. Use the back of the postcard to specify details. The chances are that it will get filed away with other related stuff to be reviewed at a later date or by the appropriate individual. There are several standard sizes of postcards available at Business Card Template : Paradiseaffordable prices;

  • 4 X 6″ $135.00/500
  • 5 X 7″ $157.50/500

  • 6 X 8″ $185.50/500

A common mistake that many folks make is thinking that this will cost a fortune. The reality is that you can send out 1000 postcards for less that $500 POSTAGE INCLUDED. Hello people…seriously, think about that!!

Mailing to Your Customers

Your customers can file them away easily…to refer back to or to remind them that you are a company that does what was effectively noted in your mailer.

You can mail postcards to your existing customer base. To do that is straightforward assuming you have a data base that contains this information. Make your list and mail a postcard to your best customers with a friendly message.

You can also get more mileage out of your other marketing efforts by adding your postcard to the mix. This makes it really easy to be more customer-oriented, select your postcard design of choice, add relevant graphics, and send it to your client or prospect list. I am not joking, try it you’ll like the results and probably put this form of getting a message out to your customers to the top of your list.

Getting Response from your Postcard Mailing

Business Postcard Template: Real Estate HouseResponse is the bottom line!! For example many real-estate agents swear by postcards to announce free evaluations, home inspections, listing and sales. They know how effective it works and what kind of response to expect. Generating a response from real estate postcard mailings is a known fact amongst real estate marketeers. While your postcards are out there talking to the masses, you can follow up with your clients and potential clients. If you decide to put this proven marketing tool to work you’ll understand, more clearly, what I am telling you…it works!

Make them Remember

In order to keep an agenda checklists are made to keep focused to remember everything. It is the best way to ensure that every “I” is dotted and every “T” is crossed. One of my elders once told me “patience is a virtue”. Well to me patience is for doctors and I want results right now. Remember successful campaigns work for many different reasons the least of which they are simple and well composed. The most important note to make is that repetition works, that’s a fact!

Add drama your product line by using a high quality photo of a design component of your product to create curiosity. It will look high-end but may not be self explanatory. That can be a good thing and precisely what is needed to perk interest.

“To be remembered is always at the top of the list if you talk to any marketing gurus. Postcards are a fantastic way to help etch a message into one’s thoughts”

Some folks fear making that commitment to yourself yet, as a home business owner you gotta do it if you’re thinking about it. This is especially important because you only live once. There is no worst feeling that looking back and saying, I wish I did!!

Everybody is a Designer

Do you have Design Ideas? Are you a creative thinker? Design is a big word that encompasses many faucets in life. You may be creating a Japanese garden, a graphic designer, an auto mechanic or a city engineer. My point is design is a part of our genetic make up, some are blessed with more skills than others but be all posses the ability to think and design. What is most important about any design is a prevailing notion of simplicity. It is always the simplest ideas that re most effective in design.

Natural Success

In order to ensure success make it simple by preparing a plan of action. I nature the frog eats the fly, the fly eats bacteria, the bacteria eats other bacteria and so on. This is a natural plan that Mother Nature has made in order to succeed. In the same manner as the balance of balance of elements affecting success in nature, our business word is not much different in terms of the plan that works. In my experience, the best way to guarantee the success of your is a delicate balance between nature and the tools our information based world offers. True success is not always felt by those around you nor is it always financially based. Often real success has multiple steps that are necessary and ea step can give you a warm a fuzzy feeling.

Which Strategy will Work for You?

A sound strategy is to invest in quality and not quantity. Throughout my three years of marketing experience, I have developed a style that meticulously looks at all areas of potential marketing with any new product. I will then look for a niche and spend a little more time and effort developing that niche. This strategy has paid off time and time again. For me, it works great and fell very sure footed in the steps I take. It is a great marketing strategy to get yourself into a mode of thinking that fulfills you. This is an important long term plan. Not finding that what really turns your crank can put you in financial hell.

Exemplary larger or small. The logo should be used in a size large enough to ensure legibility. When making your final decision consider your product logo included on banner, website, brochure or Promotional flyer. works, and my type of logo shows up anywhere. you receive a great design logo when you have spent the right amount of time exploring options like font, colors and design appeal. If you use the Pantone matching guide your works should never appear in any other colors except those approved in this guide by number or mixture.

Your color palette used for a logo color

If you want to choose the right color for your logo see a pantone chart and ask your local printer for paper swatch books…find what color you are in touch with and paper that best matches up.

Font matching headaches

For your wedding ceremony make sure that the font you choose matches your personalities. Choosing your invitations you also need to pick out the right font for the script, remebering that return adresses should be easy to read.

Make a logo for a company

Image by itself is not brand it’s decorating. If you don’t have a good logo right now, get to work on the missing elements starting with the tag line that outlines the businesses mission. Your business logo should build a brand that is strong enough to give your consumer a visual imagery of your company. Any marketing communication material should ideally have your corporate logo on it, which would give more credibility for your business as well as help your clients to perceive your business as a professional enterprise.

If you have any questions about the company you want to work with, ask your questions before requesting your logo.

  • Do you pay before or After You See Your Custom logo design help?
  • What are the correct colors to be used.
  • How much money will I sepnd
  • What If I don’t like the logo?
  • What does branding do for your business?

Set your firm’s Tone with Colors

Pantone color or CMYK color Pantone color are early choices to make with your business logo

Color can be key and can control emotional response. Make sure proper colors are used; try many of the color selectors online for visual reference. Ensure that your logo always looks clear and distinctive at any size. Logo colors are often thought of as having primary and secondary values, once you find that primary color secondary is easy. Wrong font face, wrong font color, poor orientation and sizing of corporate identity logo can attribute to bad readability. When reproducing a custom emblem for a visual using two or more colors refer to the pantone guide so you and your printer are on the same page. Corporation logo style and the company graphic design with your logo color can be thought to work in harmony with your brand.

Experiment with laying elements on a page in certain relation to other objects.

How Important is Good Logo design?

Good logo design help is highly recommended in getting a brand and creating a permenent impression with all contacts. Normally image make a logo for a company like a pro that works easily in web and print. A great logo can help a business project a positive image while a bad logo can make a company’s portrayed image down.

Business owners and graphic artists can often get sidetracked in their efforts to design the perfect logo, we must plan and execute and remember the goal…a glance engraves a memory in the viewer’s mind.

Business Cards is What We’ve Always Been Good at

12/18/2006

I thought it would be interesting to give a little history of the 2 WePrintColo(u)r.com wesites.
In 1989 WePrintColour was founded. The founder of WePrintColour is Robert Kennedy. Robert had been employed in the printing industry since 1978 and worked his way up the ladder, learning all faucets of printing including bindery, printing press operator, graphic designer, pre-press, plate making and finally sales. From 1982 to 1989 Robert honed his skills on the road selling graphic design and printing to customers. In those days there wasn’t much technology, in fact in 1985 fax machines were considered cutting edge, lol.

Throughout Robert’s travels and contact with valuable clientele it became apparent that business cards were highly neglected by ALL printing companies. Trying to get a professional business card printed was next to impossible without having to search high and low. Most printers neglected taking pride in making a business cards due to the amount of work and low profit margin. On the other hand Robert saw this as a great opportunity and consciously make an effort to be the most reliable source for getting business cards designed and printed. His thinking was “the most important service I can provide to a client is crafting that perfect business card”. Eventually Robert was regarded as the liaison to business cards that transcended the ordinary. Once clients became satisfied with the finished product and the pride taken in making that perfect business card, customers felt a level of confidence that had never been experienced before. Many other spin-off projects were awarded to Robert as a direct result of the TLC put into business card designing and print. A level of trust had been automatically assumed by many print buyers.

Unfortunately or fortunately, in 1989 Robert had outgrown the company he was working for and decided to form his own company “Reprotech”. In the early 1990’s the momentum of technology was evidently here to stay and was embraced by Reprotech Printing and Digital Media Services. Robert remained in the groove of the tech train while maintaining focus on the early day philosophy of the ultimate company business cards. This really helped propel Reprotech to consider developing an online web presence in 1998. Here’s what happened next.

1998- WePrintColour.com was formed. This website generally catered to online business looking for that unique business card that no one else had. With a fully equipped printing company of graphic designers and printing presses to deliver the same level of quality delivered in the 1980’s…special business cards. For the next 2 years WePrintColour grew into a reputable source to get business cards printed in colour.

1999- Notice the spelling of colour? What was learned in the year 1999 was the fact that not everybody spelled colour the Canadian/ British way. In fact on the internet when any phrase that included the word colour was typed Robert learned an amazing fact.

25% of the search phrases included colour

75% of the search phrases included color

What a silly oversight!! Robert quickly ran a check to see if WePrintColor.com was available as a domain name and it was. So the strategy changed a little amounting to a huge increase in business. Most folks in the USA spell color 1 way. Robert wanted to make sure that US based business knew that there was a service that wanted to print the best business cards for them. In order to market in the US this domain name was critical.

2000-2004 WePrintColor.com started to become recognized for what they did well…making business cards in color that are a true statement of each unique business. The same pride was taken with each and every business card order that Robert had taken over the last 20 years or so. Only now, Robert wanted his own custom business card Software made for folks that wanted to do it all themselves. Over 4 years web-based business card design software was developed from scratch.

2005- WePrintColour.com and WePrintColor.com were divided into separate product types. You see now that online design software was solid and clients were very happy with the finish product it was time to separate the 2 WePrintColo(u)r.com websites. One would make business cards and one would make postcards.

2006- WePrintColour.com- The transition is nearing completion. Currently we are just finishing the online postcard designer. You can see it in action by choosing a category on the left hand side and follow the online process. This software is very easy to use and intuitive.

WePrintColor.com- To get business cards designed and printed this is the site to go to. Here you’ll find all new professional business templates- UpUpdated software so anyone can design a business card form amateur to pro.

The truly uniqueness of the finished product you create is being press ready. You don’t have to worry about fonts, resolution, proper file formats, etc. Our unique design software records everything you do during the design process. Each step is recorded in case manual editing is required. However, once you approve your project and save it you are ready to get it professionally printed at the blink of an eye.

True story,

John

Let me tell you a little about me. I have been in the printing business for 30+ years. Every time I see an interesting concept I make note of it. Company postcards have been my favorite for marketing ideas and concepts, bar none. There are several reasons why! Please let me explain….

1) Very affordable- You can actually design and print your own, personalized, 2 sided postcards for less that $200.

2) You can sidestep much of the grunt work in the design process by adapting a unique business template to your specific promotion

3) “At a glance” marketing techniques have been proven over the years. This is because you are not forcing your recipient to sit down and read. In today’s fast paced business world one of the biggest mistakes you can make is assuming that business people will sit down and spend 10 mins reading your beautiful concept. Generally speaking, a type heavy postcard is doomed from the start for the above mentioned reason. It’s all about quick glance communication and rapid memory!

4) Postcards are usually square or rectangular in shape. You may want to explore a die-cut shape to add interest. A typical example of die-cutting is door hangers, allowing you to hang your circular on a door. That’s a little different and perhaps will lend an element on interest. Die-cutting has no real limits, whatever you can dream up can be produced, but the more detailed the die the more expensive your set-up cost will be.

5) If major changes occur in your business this is the most effective and portable way to communicate what has changed. At the same time remind the recipient of your existence.

Have you ever received a postcard that was so beautiful and dear to the heart that you had to keep it? In business and pleasure postcards can be the most personal, easy going  way of  delivering a highly individualized message. They are the highest imact, most portable way of communicating with your recepient when composed with thought.

Let’s have a look at a few concepts that may help you marketing your ideas a little better.

  • Web Resources

We are currently developing this postcard designer to provide most desktop publishing functions that professional software delivers. Rest assured when you complete your personalized postcard it is in cue to print on a true full color printing press. When you design with our system please take your time and get to know it. How you will benefit from this knowledge is by having control over every aspect of your postcard design, from pencil to press.

These are merely a few ideas to ponder. On this blog we are going to keep you up-to-speed with cutting edge design, print and marketing tactics that best utilize your bottom line dollar.

    Thanks for visiting!

    Sincerely,

    Robert Kennedy
