I have a postcard that is dated 1881 and heavily antiqued. To protect it I spray on varnish, Put on the first coat, let it dry then put on another. Your base color should be clear to give it a real patina of age. I also have a Collection 1907-1910 with over 690 postcards that I have done the same thing with. My favorite has an embossed picture of a eagle on a black background with a navy frame, it is in very good condition. The graphics are of a woman looking back over her shoulder, with roses to frame her profile.
